EU Structural Funds Raised for the Blind Assisting Innovation
June 28, 2018Rubedo Sistemos, a Lithuania-based pioneer company of mobile robotics solutions received €240,000 from the European Regional Development fund for the implementation of a project named BLINK (project code J05-LVPA-K-03-0068). The project is part of the 2014-2020 European Union Investment Fund Operational Programme's 1st priority Scientific Research, Experimental Development and Innovation implementation measure J05-LVPA-K.
The main deliverable of the project is the environment sensing system that continuously produces tactile representation of the surrounding environment from a series of 3D images. BLINK solution will help visually impaired people to sense objects in their surrounding environment using the assistant's remote control.
The goal of the project is to test the innovative technology and apply it to the challenges pertinent to people with visual disabilities. Translating stereoscopic sense to the tactile modality using a touch-sensitive keypad (assistant's remote control) would allow users to sense nearby objects and obstacles over safe distances.
The successful implementation of the project will have a positive impact on the company's future business development as well as on Lithuania's economic development.
